Project profile

France, Germany, Czech Republic, Sweden, UK, Ireland
01/04/2022 - 31/03/2024

Motivation

  • IO-SEA tackles the new IO challenges in the Exascale era
  • Data Scalability: massive increase of the stored data and metadata
  • System Scalability: Increase of the number of clients to storage systems
  • CPU/GPU evolution: inversion of the memory/core ratio
  • Data Placement: Manage data locality and movements
  • Data Heterogeneity: different workloads, different resources

Technical Approach

  • Design and develop a new I/O Software Exascale Architecture to tackle the increased pressure on storage systems at Exascale
  • Leverage Object Stores
  • Support Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM)
  • Provision and schedule ephemeral  of storage services on-demand
  • Instrument I/O & analyse telemetry using AI techniques
  • Co-design with  I/O intensive applications and develop user-oriented application interfaces

Status

Software components (alpha versions)

  • Workflow / data nodes and ephemeral service management
  • Instrumentation and monitoring tools
  • Hierarchical Storage Management API, HSM integration with object stores
  • First application interfaces version
  • First ephemeral services version

Collaboration with other projects

  • The three SEA Projects (DEEP-SEA, IO-SEA and RED-SEA) develop complementary technologies for the Modular Supercomputing Architecture
